Underlayment
Just under the visible floor covering is a layer of closed cell material, usually about 1/4- or 1/2-inch thick. It can be made of many different materials, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and neoprene rubber. The main purposes of these underlayment products are to lower the sound transmission and mitigate the moisture and hydrostatic pressure from reaching the surface of the floor.
